The Science Behind the Vampire Facelift

You may have heard in the news about a new skincare trend called a vampire facelift or vampire facial. The vampire facial was heavily covered in the media after it was known that Kim Kardashian had one a few months ago.

The technical name for a vampire facial is platelet rich plasma facelift.  This is not actually a surgical facelift, but an in office facial rejuvenation procedure. It is named the “vampire” facelift because it involves the use of the patient’s own blood drawn from their arm, applied to the face in order to stimulate collagen, therefore giving a lift.

Here’s how the Vampire Facelift works

1. The blood is drawn from the patient’s own arm.

2. Then it is spun in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the platelets and plasma.  The platelets and plasma contain the ingredients useful for this procedure that include growth factors, collagen builders, and platelets.

3. Once the desirable portion is removed from the blood it can be used to apply to the face.

4. The application to the face can be done in multiple different ways, alone or in combination with other procedures. Some people use this platelet rich plasma technique with other fillers including Juvéderm and Restylane while others do it as a procedure alone.

While the vampire facial is trendy at the moment, you don’t need to pay big bucks for this exact process to see the same benefits. In fact, there are several other options that incorporate the same science.

For example, when we are doing fat grafting, we take your own fat spin it down and inject that into the face which utilizes the same properties including growth factors and other college and builders to help rejuvenate the skin.

Or another option is to use topical preparations that include growth factors that have been grown in a laboratory that allow regular application with no downtime and less cost. Personally, I use a topical growth factor at least once a day if not twice. I think the overall collagen stimulation and benefits are quite significant.  I believe growth factors and using your own body’s youth stimulating properties is at the wave of the future.

Here at JanigaMDs we pride ourselves on being on the cutting-edge of technology, and are excited to offer the topical growth factor preparation in two different formulations as well as facial fat grafting.
