Two Tummy Tuck Transformations by Dr. Timothy Janiga

With my line of work, often seeing is believing. That’s why today we are profiling two of our patients who underwent drastic tummy tuck transformations. These women have very different body types, so you can see how plastic surgery can benefit just about anyone.

Our first transformation comes from a patient with extra skin on the abdomen from having multiple children. The laxity of the skin in this area is very common after the stomach has been stretched multiple times from pregnancy. As you can see this woman would not be able to lose anymore weight or do any more crunches to improve her stomach. Her skin was not able to regain its tightness and elasticity.

A tummy tuck to remove this extra skin was performed allowing her to have a flat stomach once again. The photo shows her stomach before surgery and three months post operation.

Tummy Tuck Before and After

In our second before and after plastic surgery photo features a patient that had about 5 pounds of tissue removed from the abdominal area to give her back a flat and more appealing stomach. Additionally in this patient a small amount of liposuction was performed to improve the contour.

The photo below shows the transformation of the patient’s stomach from before to three months post operation.

Tummy tuck and liposuction before and after

Tummy tuck and sculpting procedures can be performed for women of different sizes, shapes, and anatomy. As you can see from these two examples sometimes only skin needs to be tightened and other times a more extensive procedure with contouring can be done.

Plastic Cosmetic Surgery: 14.6 Million Procedures Performed in 2012

Plastic Cosmetic Surgery is Becoming More Popular Every Year

In a recent post on the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) website, they reported that 14.6 million Plastic Cosmetic Surgeries were performed in the United States, during 2012. That figure is up 5% from the 2011 numbers. We like to think that presages good things for the economy, because we look forward to meeting more patients and making even more friends, in 2013.

The fastest growing Cosmetic Surgery procedures were those focused on facial rejuvenation, using both the minimally invasive, as well as traditional, surgical approaches. Breast augmentation remains the most popular Plastic Surgery procedure among the top five.

Top Five Plastic Cosmetic Surgery Procedures for 2012

There was also an increase in reconstructive plastic surgery procedures, those used to correct congenital abnormalities and repair damage from injuries.

Tummy Tuck: Perfect Solution for Muffin Tops

Tummy Tuck: Great for Post Pregnancy or Post Weight-Loss “Hang Over”

Abdominoplasty, popularly known as the Tummy Tuck, can be an excellent solution for regaining a tighter, slimmer waistline by means of a removal of the excess skin and fat, as well as muscle and skin tightening, in the affected areas of the abdomen.

People who have lost a lot of weight, even after firming up their abdominal muscles through exercise, often have excess, loose skin remaining. Pregnancy for women, and, for both sexes, aging and even heredity, all may contribute to the “muffin top” look. With a Tummy Tuck, plastic surgery can help you enjoy a smoother, slimmer waistline.

What Will My Tummy Tuck Procedure Involve?

Dr. Timothy Janiga will consult with you at length, to go over your options and determine exactly what it is you want your Tummy Tuck to accomplish. He will also explain the procedure in its entirety, provide “before & after” photos for you to look at, answer all of your questions and discuss the specific results you can expect from your surgery.

The procedure itself will be performed at the local Reno/Tahoe outpatient surgery center, under a general anesthetic. A horizontal incision is normally made from one hip to the other, usually below the bikini line, to facilitate removing fat and excess skin.

How Fast will I Recover from my Tummy Tuck?

Dr. Timothy Janiga will advise you about avoiding lifting, and any other restrictions and recommendations you will need to observe for the first 6 weeks after Tummy Tuck surgery. Depending on your occupation, you can expect to return to work sometime between 2 and 6 weeks following your surgery. You can expect to see full results within three months.

Body Contouring After Major Weight Loss

Body Contouring is an excellent way to improve overall aesthetics after major weight loss.

Northern Nevada has gotten serious about losing weight. The popularity of TV shows like The Biggest Loser has made a great many people in the Reno/Tahoe region rethink their lifestyle, and encouraged them to lead healthier lives. Whether you have lost a lot of weight through diet and exercise, or undergone bariatric or some other related weight loss surgery, following up with body contouring is the next logical step.

After you reach your new, healthier body weight, there can still be issues of excess and flabby skin and tissue all over your body. An upper and/or lower body lift can be the answer: necklift, armlift, buttocks and thigh liftbreast lift,  and tummy tuck address these issues. Body Contouring procedures can serve to bring your overall body image into alignment with your more healthy height/weight proportions.

Body Contouring procedures can be performed in incremental steps.

Some people like to have all of their body contouring surgeries performed in one sitting, and there are valid arguments for taking all those steps at once: getting it all out of the way, a single period of healing and possibly integrating liposuction into the contouring. But it is hardly necessary get all of your procedures and lifts out the way in one day.

Many people like to spread their surgeries over many months, or even a few years, in order to heal between procedures or simply spread the costs over a longer amount of time. It is also possible to have more targeted body contouring procedures, as your new silhouette emerges over time.

Dr. Timothy Janiga is one of Reno’s foremost Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeons.

Janiga MDs was established specifically to serve the people of the Northern Nevada region. Dr. Timothy Janiga earned his Bachelors of Science from the University of Nevada at Reno in 1997, graduating as the #1 ranked graduate from the College of Arts & Sciences. He then went on to earn his M.D. from the University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine, in 2001. He returned to Reno to establish his own practice, in the town he loves best.

Body Contouring procedures require a high degree of technical knowledge and skill, and are best performed by someone with a decidedly artistic eye, who can see the desired results long before they are fully manifested.

If you would like to schedule an appointment with Dr. Timothy Janiga to discuss your options, and look at before & after pictures of other people who have benefited from Body Contouring after their own major weight loss, please contact us today. We would love to speak with you.

Liposuction & Cosmetic Surgery: Why so popular?

Cosmetic Surgery and Liposuction are becoming more mainstream.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ report on 2011 Plastic Surgery Procedural Statistics, 182,000 liposuction procedures were performed on women in America that year, while 23,000 were performed on men. Interestingly, the Men’s numbers dropped slightly from 2010 and the Women’s went up. More and more men seem to be going in for Face lifts, though. But today we’re going to discuss Liposuction: The best thing to happen to beauty & fitness, since Diet & Exercise.

History and origins of the concept of Liposuction.

It is thought that the first removal of fat by suction was performed in 1920s France by Charles Dujarier. Sadly, gangrene developed in his first patient, leading to the death a famous Parisian model. His career ended. Then in 1974, Italian gynecologist Dr. Giorgio Fischer started practicing liposuction procedures by vacuuming subcutaneous fat with a better eye towards sterile technique, and a completely new field of medicine was born.

Liposuction comes into it’s own.

In 1987, two enterprising French doctors named Illouz and Fournier refined the technique even further. They would slice the underlying fatty tissues with a rotating, electric scalpel, inserted through small incisions. The tool they used was basically an oscillating blade housed within a thin metal tube, called a cannula. It carved up fat cells, along with other tissues and fluids, which were then suctioned away via rubber tubing by light vacuum.

By 1980, liposuction had become extremely popular here in America. Most of the negative publicity was centered around excessive bleeding and rippling of the skin. Then in 1985, a Dermatologist named Dr. Jeffrey A. Klein invented the “tumescent” technique, completely revolutionizing liposuction surgery. Using much smaller cannulas, liposuction could now be performed under local anesthesia, with excessive bleeding and undesirable skin depressions or rippling, a thing of the past.

Dr. Timothy Janiga is one of the best lipo surgeons around.

I know you expect us to say that on Dr. Janiga’s own website, but those aren’t just empty words. You would have to look long and hard to find a more dedicated, better educated plastic surgeon in Northern Nevada than Dr. Timothy Janiga. He has memberships in a great many prestigious Associations, like the Reed. O. Dingman Society and the AMA. Of course, he is also a member in good standing with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the Fellow American College of Surgeons (FACS).

There are many more Societies and Accolades to list, but they miss the point of Dr. Janiga’s passion for his work and the gift of his surgical skill. He genuinely cares about every one of his patients. He is excited to watch as people who he has connected with personally, grow and blossom as their inner beauty becomes better reflected by their outer beauty.

Come see for yourself.

Fat Removed via Plastic Surgery Does Not Return

New Liposuction Study proves that removed fat is gone

Dr. Eric Swanson, a Member Surgeon of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), evaluated 301 patients undergoing liposuction alone, and liposuction in combination with abdominoplasty. Dr. Swanson employed pre and post surgical photographs in conjunction with computer-aided measurements. Patient body dimensions were measured, before and at least three months after surgery.

The study concluded that no fat regrowth was observed in treated areas of the arms, abdomen or lower body. All other upper body dimensions remained unchanged after surgery, as well. Fat cells were not redistributed, nor had they migrated.

“Previous studies have evaluated small numbers of patients and used imprecise measuring techniques, limiting their power to reliably detect changes,” Dr. Swanson said in an interview. “Our study included a sufficient number of patients and used precise measurements, making the conclusions highly reliable. Patients can be reassured that their improvements will last and they need not worry about putting weight back on disproportionately.”

No indicators that fat cells will regenerate

While a poor diet can of course create new fat cells, Dr. Swanson’s study also discovered that even a year or more after liposuction and combination liposuction / abdominoplasty procedures, the average reductions in hip measurements remained significant. Even a group of 34 patients who had gained five pounds or more up to a year after their surgeries, still maintained significant reductions. This indicates that long term expectations are high.

“Of course, liposuction does not change your ability to gain or lose weight.” Dr. Swanson continued. “Its value is in permanently reducing the number of fat cells in problem areas. For any given weight you will be in the future, your proportions will be better after liposuction, barring extremes in weight gain.”

A Plastic Surgery which keeps its promise

Liposuction promises to remove excess fat from those stubborn areas, which exercise and dieting alone cannot seem to remove. It has ranked among the top five most popular cosmetic surgical procedures since 1992, and might be the most commonly performed plastic surgery in America.

Be Proud of Your Summer Body – With a Tummy Tuck

Summer Is Almost Here. Be proud of your summer body!

Hot temperatures are here and we are looking forward to all those weekends at Lake Tahoe, but some of us may not be looking forward to the summer clothes in our closet. You might be worried about how the tummy or mid section looks in those more form fitting seasonal clothes or by the amount of skin summer wardrobes tend to show.  A tummy tuck is my most common procedure around this time because everyone wants to look their best in their swim suits, lounging on the beach.

Does your Tummy Need a Tuck?

After having children, the tummy area can be very difficult to flatten again, despite diet and exercise.  The clothing that used to be your favorite just does not lay on the midsection the way that it did before.  There is nothing worse than looking into the mirror and being dissatisfied with your reflection.  Dr. Timothy Janiga at Janiga MDs can help you regain your confidence with a tummy tuck, so that you can feel comfortable wearing even the slimmest of your dresses.

What does a Tummy Tuck do?

A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is used to remove that excess fat and/or skin around the mid section, thus flattening and returning the curve and shape of the waist to it’s former glory. A tummy tuck can even tighten the waist line itself and restore your hourglass figure.  It can sometimes be combined with other procedures like liposuction or breast reduction/ lift depending on your specific situation and desired outcome.

How is the procedure done and what is the recovery time?

A tummy tuck is performed in our outpatient surgery center in Reno, under general anesthesia. It generally involves a hip-to-hip incision that allows for muscle and skin tightening and fat removal.  Full results from a tummy tuck are expected within 3 months.

Get back into your favorite summer dress! Results vary, so call Dr. Timothy Janiga today for your personal consultation at 775-398-4600.

Male Breast Reduction – Solve an Embarrassing Condition: Gynecomastia

There is help for Gynecomastia – A Male Breast Reduction

Many men will develop breast tissue that disappears as they age, but in certain men it may persist and is called gynecomastia.  In most cases this is a normal process but in some cases it can be related to the use of certain medications.  It can be a source of insecurity and embarrassment for men of all ages.

Some men may be reluctant to seek treatment for this condition, but in recent years men have become one of the fastest growing populations seeking cosmetic surgery, so the frequency of this and other male contouring procedures such as liposuction continues to rise.

What can a certified plastic surgeon do to help my gynecomastia?

Male Breast Reduction surgery is one way to treat gynecomastia by giving the male chest a more masculine appearance. If a man you know is avoiding circumstances that would require them to take off their shirt or wearing multiple layers of clothing to try to disguise their enlarged breast tissue, there is help and it may be time to solve this embarrassing condition.

How is this procedure performed?

Male breast reduction surgery is usually done in the operating room under general anesthesia and involves removing the glandular tissue. Liposuction may be needed in addition to give the contour that is desired.  This surgery is commonly performed in conjunction with liposuction of the flanks or stomach to give an overall improvement in the upper body shape and form.  All this in only a few hours of surgery and recovery time before leaving the Reno surgery center.

What are the expected results?

Expect a slimmer, tighter, and more contoured chest and upper body. So stop waiting and suffering the embarrassment and avoidance of social situations – schedule your consultation with Dr. Janiga today.

Sculpt Your Body for a Hot Reno Summer – Part 2

Come On In … the Water is Fine!

It’s almost summer and soon everyone will be sporting their best bathing suit. All winter you slaved away at the gym working to get your body in shape for the coming summer!  If all your hard work paid off with weight loss on a grand scale, you may be a candidate for improved skin tone, body shape, and a slimmer and more contoured waist, abdomen, buttock and thigh area, or what we call body lift surgery.

What is Body Lift surgery?

Body lift surgery is a grouping of cosmetic procedures performed for the tummy, thighs, buttocks and/or legs.  When these procedures are combined in different ways they are called a body lift or a circumferential body lift.

Why a Body Lift?

This procedure is typically performed for men and women with excess tissue or skin in the tummy, buttocks, flank, and thigh areas.  It is particularly common for people to have this done after significant weight loss.  A body lift is performed to improve tone of the skin and shape of the body, giving you a slimmer and more contoured waist, abdomen, buttock and thigh area.

How is a body lift performed?

This procedure should be performed in an operating room under general anesthesia and takes a few hours depending on which of the procedures are combined for your specific circumstance and body type.

How much recovery time should I expect?

Swelling and bruising may last up to three weeks. Return to work can be expected within 3 weeks. Full recovery time depends upon the combination of procedures completed in each case.

Get your sculpted body now!

Get the improved skin tone, body shape, and a slimmer and more contoured waist, abdomen, buttock and thigh area that you deserve, so you can enjoy your body, and be free to show it off this summer.  Contact Dr. Janiga today for your personal consultation.

Liposuction Doesn’t Have to Suck

Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed. Data for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons rates liposuction in the top three surgeries for 2011, with 205,000 performed. In the hands of an experienced Board Certified Plastic Surgeon like Dr. Timothy Janiga liposuction is a safe and reliable procedure to help contour the body.

How Do I Know if Liposuction is for Me?

The ideal candidate is a man or woman that is close to their ideal weight but has stubborn areas of fat deposition that do not respond to diet and/or exercise. Commonly this is the lower abdomen in men and women, thighs or buttocks in women and flank areas in men. Despite being at ideal weight it is common to hold onto fat in one area depending on your body. Liposuction can be performed in almost any area including undersurface of the chin, arms, flanks, tummy, thighs, buttocks, and calves.

What is the Procedure?

Liposuction is performed in the operating room under general anesthesia in most cases, but localized smaller areas can also be done in the office setting under local anesthesia while the patient is awake. Depending on your specific situation and the treatment area desired Dr. Janiga will help you decide what setting is best for your case.

Liposuction is performed by making a small incision in the skin to insert a canula. That canula is used under suction to remove excess fat deposition and contour the area. This can be used to flatten the lower stomach, remove “love handles” from the sides of the tummy, help those stubborn saddlebag areas on the sides of the upper legs. It can also be performed to shape the buttocks.

One of the more exciting areas that has developed in recent years is the use of this technology to contour the abdominal muscles, helping to give men and women back their six pack.

Most plastic surgeons do to not advise liposuction as a weight loss tool, but Dr. Janiga can meet with you and help you decide what is the correct time and areas for your case. Call us today for your personal consultation at 775-398-4600.
