ICON Resurfacing Laser

ICON Resurfacing Laser is a laser that uses Erbium gas to target water. By targeting water, small areas of skin are removed allowing new healthy skin to grow in. The goal of this laser is to resurface the skin on the face, decrease fine lines and wrinkling, decrease the appearance of sunspots, and improve the texture and tone of the skin.

What is a ICON Resurfacing Laser?

What type of laser is the ICON Resurfacing Laser?

The ICON laser is a resurfacing laser, like a CO2 laser, that uses erbium gas instead of carbon dioxide to resurface the skin.  ICON is one of the newest fractionated erbium lasers.  The ICON can be set multiple ways to target many different problems in the skin.  The major treatment goals of this laser include melasma, acne scars, resurfacing the skin, decreasing fine lines and wrinkling, improving texture and tone of the skin, and decreasing the size of the pores.  The ICON is, in Dr. Jennifer Janiga’s opinion, one of the best in-office treatments available.

Are there different settings with the ICON Laser?

Yes, the ICON laser can be tailored to the type of skin you have, the depth of your wrinkles, the intensity of your melasma, or your ability to take time off of work.  In fact, the ICON can be specific enough to treat different areas of the face with lower or higher settings.  If for example the wrinkles around the mouth were the most severe, Dr. Jennifer Janiga could alter the settings to be more intense in that area.   If you needed to get back to work in a few days, the settings could be used that allow for faster healing times.

What can I expect during treatment with the ICON?

When you come in for the laser you will read and sign consent form and receive your post procedure instructions.  Then, a topical medication will be applied to the treatment area for 30-60 minutes to decrease discomfort with the procedure.  With certain higher settings oral medications will be prescribed which you will take when you arrive.   The procedure takes between 30 and 60 minutes depending on your specific condition.  After your procedure the nursing staff will apply sunscreen and give you an icepack to help with any swelling.

What can I expect after the treatment with the ICON?

After laser treatment with the ICON you will feel a warm, almost sunburn-like sensation of the skin for a few hours.  There will be redness and swelling, especially of the eye area for 1-4 days depending on the settings used.  The skin will look darker in the treated areas for a few days and then will peel slightly for lighter settings and more significantly for deeper settings.

What is the downtime with the ICON?

The downtime with the ICON will vary depending on your treatment.  Treatment for melasma is a lighter setting and most patients have a slight sunburn type look for a day or so.  With severe deep wrinkling or deep acne scarring the settings are higher and patients should plan on being away from social events or important meetings at work for 5-7 days.  Even with the deeper settings most people can work from home after one day of recovery time.

Can the ICON be combined with other procedures at Janiga MDs Reno office?

Yes, there are some procedures that can be performed on the same day as the ICON.  Please discuss any additional procedures you are interested in with Dr. Jennifer Janiga to see if combining them with the ICON is appropriate.
