Salmon Patch or Angel Kiss
What is a “salmon patch” or “angel kiss”?
More than one-third of infants are born with a pick patch at the nape of the neck or on the eyelids (an “Angel kiss”, a “salmon patch” or a “stork bite”). These are minor blood vessels dilations and are not true port-wine stains. Those located on the eyelids and foreheads fade slowly and eventually disappear. Those at the base of the neck are often permanent. Please see Dr. Jennifer Janiga if you have any question about which type of blood vessel growth you or your child has.
What is the cause of “salmon patch” or” angel kiss”?
The lesions are congenital, but the cause is unknown.
How is a “salmon patch” or” angel kiss” diagnosed?
They are diagnosed by their appearance.
What treatment is available to treat “salmon patch” or “angel kiss”?
Unless bothersome, these are usually un-treated. If treatment is discussed Dr. Jennifer Janiga has years of experience using the “Pulse-Dye Laser”. It is a safe and effective treatment for a port-wine stain. Treatment success depends on the age at which it is begun and the location of the lesion. With multiple treatments, most port-wine stains can be significantly lightened. In order to minimize discomfort, topical, local, or general anesthesia can be administered prior to the procedure.
