What is a Chin Augmentation?
The chin is a crucial element in achieving an attractive, proportionate-looking face. Much like the eyes and lips, the difference a chin can make in the way that we perceive ourselves – and others – is hard to deny. Many patients choose to have facial chin augmentation either because they were born with a “weak jawline” or have developed a recessed chin with aging.
There are two ways that our plastic surgeons in Reno can perform your surgical procedure. A chin augmentation without chin implants reshapes the chin by using the patient’s own tissue to increase chin prominence. Chin implant surgery helps strengthen and increase the prominence of the chin, restoring facial harmony with balanced facial features.
The Procedure
Chin augmentation surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure in our Reno surgery center under general anesthesia. They can be performed using your own tissue or an implant. When a chin augmentation is performed with your own tissue, an incision is usually made on the inside of the mouth along the lower gum, while another incision is made under the chin. The chin bone may then be moved forward and secured into the new position, sitting more prominently forward.
Chin surgery can also be performed with implants and involves a small incision inside the mouth or outside the mouth and under the chin. This creates a pocket for the implant to be inserted in front of the chin bone and under the muscle. In each case, the surgical procedures can take up to an hour and a half with an additional hour of recovery time before leaving the Reno surgery center.

Recovery & Results
Depending on your profession and need for personal discretion, you may need to allow seven to ten days before returning to work. Swelling and bruising are to be expected for a week, and stitches also remain in for a week. During this time, you may need to wear a compression garment and eat a soft diet. Keeping your head elevated and avoiding strenuous activity will also help reduce swelling and alleviate discomfort.
Full results are expected in eight to 12 weeks. After your chin enhancement, you can expect a more prominent chin and proportioned facial features.
Frequently Asked Questions about Chin Augmentation
Can you feel a chin implant?
After chin implant surgery, it is commonly reported that patients can initially feel the implant under their skin. Fortunately, the swelling subsides over time and the area heals– this sensation often decreases, and the implant starts to feel like a natural part of the chin as a result.
How long does a chin implant last?
The longevity of a chin implant can depend on several factors, but with proper placement and care, it is typically considered to be a permanent solution. Regular follow-ups with a qualified plastic surgeon can help monitor the status of the implant.
Can a chin implant improve the jawline?
Yes, a chin implant can significantly improve the appearance of your jawline. By increasing the projection of the chin, it can create a more balanced facial profile and strengthen the jawline.
Does a chin implant help double chin?
While a chin implant can enhance the contour of your jawline, it doesn’t directly address the cause of a double chin. You can pair chin augmentation with another procedure depending on whether your double chin is caused by excess fatty tissue or loose, sagging skin.
How are chin implants secured?
Most commonly, surgeons use screws to attach the implant directly to the bone. In some cases, the implant can be designed to fit snugly around the chin bone. Additionally, the surrounding soft tissue also helps to keep the implant in place once it heals.
