What is Male Breast Reduction?

Men will frequently develop breast tissue that fails to disappear as they age. Breast development in men is called gynecomastia. In the vast majority of cases this breast development is a benign condition. This type of breast development can be a source of embarrassment and insecurity that can affect men in all aspects of their life. Men with gynecomastia will often avoid any type of shirt-off activities such as swimming, water skiing or wakeboarding. Men will often layer their clothing to cover their enlarged breasts, even in summer. Male breast reduction involves removing fat, glandular tissue and skin to develop a more masculine chest.

How is this procedure performed?

Male breast reduction is performed in our outpatient surgery center in Reno under general anesthesia. In most cases it involves removal of excess tissue around the male breast using a combination of liposuction and the surgical removal of excess breast tissue to tighten the tissue of the chest wall and create a more masculine appearance.

How long will the procedure take?

This procedure takes one to two hours with another one to two hours of recovery time before leaving the surgery center.

How much recovery time should I expect?

Male breast reduction surgery can result in swelling and bruising that may last up to three weeks. Return to work can be expected within 5 to 7 days after the procedure. Dr. Timothy Janiga encourages patients to wear a compression garment for 6 weeks post-operatively. Full results are expected within 3 to 6 months.

What are the typical results?

Typical results from a male breast reduction include a tighter, slimmer, and more contoured chest. Results vary, depending on your specific case.
