Breast Reduction Surgery FAQs

What is breast reduction?

Breast reduction reduces the size of large breasts that may be causing you to feel self-conscious and/or have physical discomfort.

The procedure involves removing fat, glandular tissue and skin to create lighter, more proportionate breasts.

During the procedure the areola may be reduced in size and repositioned as well in order to naturally fit the newly shaped and resized breast.

How is the procedure performed?

A breast reduction is performed at our Reno outpatient surgery center under general anesthesia. There are several ways to perform breast reduction. The two most common types of breast reductions that Dr. Timothy Janiga performs are a traditional “anchor” shape  or a “vertical” breast reduction.

The “anchor” shape breast reduction involves an incision around the areola, a vertical incision between the areola and infra-mammary fold, and a horizontal incision across the underside of each breast. This type of reduction is typically performed for larger breast reductions.

With a “vertical” breast reduction, the incision is made around the areola and down to the infra-mammary crease. This type of reduction is more commonly performed for smaller-to-moderate size breast reductions.

Both techniques serve to remove excess skin and glandular tissue as well as repositioning the areola to a more youthful and natural position for the newly shaped and resized breast.

How much time will the procedure take?

This procedure takes between one and three hours with another two hours of recovery time before leaving the surgery center.

How much recovery time should I expect after a breast reduction?

Swelling and minimal bruising may last up to three weeks. Return to work can be expected within seven to 10 days. Full results are expected within three to six months.

What are the typical results?

You will have smaller and more youthful breasts with relief from physical pain associated with excessively large breasts. Results may vary. During your one-on-one consultation with Dr. Timothy Janiga, he will discuss the type of breast reduction that will be performed to best serve your needs and share a realistic expectation for your personal outcome.

Do you perform breast reduction surgery in your Reno office?

Yes. We evaluate and treat patients who desire a breast reduction. Initial consultation length varies, but is usually not more than 15-30 minutes. The actual procedure will take longer and will be discussed in detail when your procedure is scheduled.
