Breast Reduction

in Reno, Nevada

Despite the stereotype that large breasts are a desirable trait, that’s not always true. Sometimes they can cause serious problems. For some women, the physical symptoms, including back, neck pain, shoulder pain, and skin irritation that come with excessively large breasts, can be overwhelming. Others can become self-conscious because of their breast shape and size and seek to reduce their size. A reduction mammaplasty from JanigaMDs can go a long way toward resolving these issues.

What is Breast Reduction?

Breast weight from enlarged glandular tissue can lead to chronic discomfort, posture problems, and severe breast ptosis. In addition to tissue removal, your procedure will be tailored to address your specific concerns and goals. At your aesthetic plastic surgery consultation, your board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Timothy Janiga, will review your medical history and create a plan that prioritizes your comfort, appearance, and long-term wellness.

Weight gain, pregnancy, and natural growth in breast size can all contribute to uncomfortably large breasts and the desire to undergo surgery to reduce their size. At your breast surgery consultation, we will discuss your medical history and treatment goals to determine whether you are a candidate for breast reduction and how we can best meet your individual needs.

Types of Breast Reduction

The two most common types of surgical techniques used during breast reduction surgery performed by Dr. Janiga are a traditional “anchor” shape or a “vertical” breast reduction. The “anchor” shape breast reduction is typically performed for larger breast reductions, whereas the “vertical” reduction is typically reserved for smaller-to-moderate size breast reductions. Both techniques serve to remove excess tissue and skin as well as reposition the areola to a more youthful and natural position for the newly shaped and resized breast.

Before Your Breast Reduction Procedure

Before your procedure, you will meet with Dr. Janiga for a comprehensive consultation to discuss your goals, medical history, and any questions you may have. Depending on your health and anatomy, Dr. Janiga may order lab work, a mammogram, or other tests to ensure you are a good candidate for surgery. You will also receive pre-operative instructions, which may include adjusting certain medications, stopping smoking, and arranging for a caregiver to assist you after surgery.

Your Breast Reduction Procedure

Dr. Timothy Janiga performs breast reductions at his surgery center, Mountain West Surgery Center in Reno using general anesthesia. Dr. Janiga will remove excess breast tissue and fat to create lighter, more proportionate breasts. During the procedure, the areola may be reduced in size and repositioned to naturally fit the newly shaped and resized breast. Breast reduction incisions will be carefully placed around the nipple-areola complex and/or under the breast fold where they can be easily concealed. The remaining breast skin will be lifted and tightened for a smooth, natural-looking contour.

This breast reduction procedure takes between one and three hours, with another two hours of recovery time before breast reduction patients can leave the surgery center.

After Your Breast Reduction Procedure

Immediately following your breast reduction, you will spend some time in our recovery area at Mountain West Surgery Center while your vital signs are monitored. Once you’re cleared to go home, a trusted friend or family member will need to drive you and stay with you for at least the first 24 hours. You will be sent home with a supportive surgical bra, detailed post-op instructions, and prescribed medications to manage discomfort and reduce the risk of infection.

What to Expect After Breast Reduction Surgery

After your plastic surgery, you can expect some swelling and minimal bruising for up to three weeks after breast reduction cosmetic surgery. Most patients can return to work in about one to two weeks, but for up to six weeks of recovery, you will need to avoid strenuous physical activities, take pain medications as needed, and allow your body enough time to rest and recover fully. Full results are expected within three to six months.

Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Reduction

Can breast grow back after reduction?

Although breasts can grow back after reduction, this is very rare.

Can you drink alcohol after breast reduction?

You should wait 5 days to drink alcohol after breast reduction. Do not consume alcohol while taking pain medication.

How do I know if I need a breast reduction?

If you have experienced back and shoulder pain, notice uncomfortable chaffing, or are generally unhappy with the size of your breasts, Dr. Trupiano will most likely recommend you have breast reduction surgery. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Trupiano to confirm your candidacy.

How long is breast reduction recovery?

Every patient is different, but we encourage at least a 5-day rest period before returning to work. After returning to work, it is important to take it easy and avoid strenuous exercise for the next few days. Physically intensive jobs may require you to take off time. Again, the exact amount of rest needed will be determined by Dr. Trupiano.

At what age should you get a breast reduction?

There is no perfect age for breast reduction. Depending on the reason for the reduction, patients can be as young as teenagers or in their senior years as long as they are in good health.

Does breast reduction effect breast feeding?

While you will likely be encouraged to wait until after pregnancy, breast reductions should not impact your ability to breastfeed. The nipple is treated carefully during the procedures to avoid complications with breastfeeding, though pregnancy will likely re-enlarge the breast.

Will insurance cover my breast reduction?

Dr. Trupiano does not accept any insurance for breast reduction procedures. If you are considering a reduction, you can discuss finance options with Dr. Trupiano during your consultation.
