What is a Light Chemical Peel?

View Patient Gallery

Your skin is a living organ made up of millions of cells. Every day, thousands of cells die and are replaced by new cells. Unfortunately, as we age, this becomes a slower and more haphazard process, making our skin unable to shed dark blotches, sun damage, or a dull complexion. A light chemical peel, also known as a superficial peel, can help this process along by removing layers of dead skin cells so that your skin can rejuvenate and turn over new, healthy cells. This process is achieved by applying a specific chemical solution to the skin for a short period of time, which exfoliates the skin and leaves a smooth, rejuvenated layer.

This alpha-hydroxy acid, derived from sugar cane and fruit, can be a regular part of your at-home regimen, but a more concentrated version can produce great results during a chemical peel. This treatment can reduce fine wrinkling and sun damage, also improving uneven skin tone and rough skin texture. Mild scarring, dryness, and hyperpigmentation can all be improved. This peel is safe during pregnancy and nursing, so it is a common go-to for the changes of acne and pigmentation that occur during this time.  A glycolic acid treatment results in very little flaking of the outer layer of skin and requires minimal downtime, making it a great addition to your regular regimen. We recommend patients undergo a series of four treatments spaced three weeks apart for the best results.

An alpha-hydroxy acid derived from almonds, this treatment can effectively reduce redness and rosacea, as well as calm acne-prone skin and reduce the appearance of pores. We recommend a series of four treatments spaced ten days apart, meaning this treatment is mild and requires minimal downtime. Most patients experience very little flaking after treatment.

This alpha-hydroxy acid is naturally found in honey and apples, and can have excellent anti-aging benefits. This treatment can stimulate your body’s production of collagen, elastin, and glycoproteins, reducing the appearance of age spots, brown blotches, and other forms of hyperpigmentation. We recommend a series of four peels spaced three weeks apart, and patients usually experience little flaking between treatments.

A beta-hydroxy acid derived from willow tree bark, this treatment can be a highly effective option for acne-prone skin. Most patients achieve reduced oil production and anti-acne benefits, including anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal effects. Superficial acne scars can also be smoothed. We recommend this treatment as an effective part of your regular anti-acne care, consisting of a series of four peels spaced 10 days apart. This treatment produces little to no flaking and requires little downtime.

Before Your Light Chemical Peel Procedure

Before receiving a chemical peel, one of our advanced aestheticians under the guidance and training of board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jennifer Janiga  will assess the patient’s skin to determine the best facial peel option. Patients with severely sensitive skin may not be good candidates for a chemical peel. Those with active acne, an active skin infection, or cold sores must wait for their skin to heal to safely receive a chemical peel. In the days leading up to a chemical peel treatment, patients should stay moisturized and avoid significant sun exposure to prevent sunburn or irritation to the treatment area.

Patients with deeper skin conditions like deep scars or wrinkles may benefit from other chemical peel options, including the medium chemical peel or deep chemical peel.

Your Light Chemical Peel Procedure

To begin the chemical peel treatment, a JanigaMDs advanced aesthetician will cleanse the patient’s face. A chemical solution will be applied to the top layer of skin and left to sit for a few minutes so that it can break down the outermost layer of skin cells. Patients may experience a tingling sensation, but this is typically not considered painful. Once the chemical solution has taken full effect, it will be gently wiped away or neutralized, depending on the peel. The advanced aesthetician will apply moisturizer to manage dryness and minimize discomfort after treatment.

After Your Light Chemical Peel Procedure

Light chemical peels usually require little recovery time and can be an effective treatment as part of your skincare regimen. As with most skin treatments, it’s important to avoid sun exposure after treatment and check with our skincare specialists before using skincare products. Patients may want to wait 1-2 days to wear makeup. You may experience some mild redness that looks like sunburn, but this usually subsides quickly.

What to Expect After Your Light Chemical Peel Procedure

The results of a light peel will develop gradually as new skin is resurfaced, replacing dull, damaged skin cells with a healthy layer of glowing, youthful-looking skin. Most patients can see significant improvement within five to seven days. Results will continue to improve with repeated treatments.
