miraDry® is a non-surgical treatment designed to dramatically reduce underarm sweat and odor by targeting the sweat glands directly. The technology uses heat-based energy in a controlled manner to selectively destroy sweat glands, while a built-in cooling system protects the surface of the skin and underlying tissues, ensuring safety and comfort during treatment. Once sweat glands are eliminated, they do not regenerate, making miraDry® a long-lasting solution for hyperhidrosis and unwanted underarm odor.
miraDry® is a permanent and effective treatment for treating axillary hyperhidrosis in men. It is the only FDA-cleared permanent treatment for this condition (Botox is also approved, but it is temporary). As a result of the procedure, the amount of sweat and odor output from men’s underarm area is greatly reduced. miraDry® eliminates underarm sweat and odor glands with immediate and lasting results.
Men who undergo miraDry® typically see a permanent 85% reduction in sweat after the first procedure. Most over-the-counter deodorants only work temporarily to reduce sweat by 20%, making miraDry® the most effective option out there. Some men sweat so profusely that 85% reduction is not enough for them. In these cases, a second treatment can be done a few months later to further reduce their sweating.
miraDry® is safe for all skin types and skin tones, making it an effective treatment for most patients. However, men with a history of keloid scarring, existing scars in the treatment area, or active infections may not be good candidates. Before the miraDry® treatment session, patients will consult with Dr. Janiga or one of her associates to examine their medical history and assess their underarms to make sure this is a suitable treatment.
miraDry® treatment begins by creating a grid on the armpits to precisely map out which sweat glands will be treated and evenly distribute the thermal energy. Local anesthesia will be applied, and then the miraDry® device will be placed in the armpit non-invasively to deliver heat. Each armpit takes about 45 minutes to complete. After the miraDry® procedure, the area is cleaned, and you’re free to return home or to work. Some patients describe a warming sensation or light pressure, but there is very little discomfort during the procedure.
After miraDry®, patients may have temporary numbness and redness, mild discomfort, and swelling that improve significantly within the first few days. Cold compresses and anti-inflammatory medications can be used as needed to alleviate any discomfort. Patients can immediately return to work or their daily routine, and it is usually safe to return to exercise within a week of the procedure.
Many patients see a significant reduction in sweating after just one treatment in our Reno offices.
