Radiesse® is made from Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA), a biocompatible, biodegradable material similar to one of the components found in your bones. CaHA has been a safe and common ingredient in medical products for many years. When used in injectable fillers, it stimulates the body’s natural collagen production (biostimulation) and provides scaffolding for new collagen fibers to develop. This creates structure in the deep facial layers to combat facial volume loss and skin texture changes caused by loss of collagen during the natural aging process.
Radiesse works differently from hyaluronic acid fillers by stimulating collagen production for longer-lasting results. Radiesse is FDA-approved for moderate to severe facial wrinkles, including deep nasolabial folds (smile lines), marionette lines, pre-jowl folds, and more. By filling in these deep lines and wrinkles and renewing skin hydration, Radiesse can also improve skin texture for an overall rejuvenated, youthful appearance. Radiesse can also be used to build definition in the face by enhancing the contours of the cheekbones and jawline. It can also be used in the hands for overall volume loss and collagen stimulation, and in diluted form into the lines on the chest by very experienced injectors.
Most patients looking for non-surgical facial rejuvenation can benefit from Radiesse, but a consultation with Dr. Janiga or her associates is necessary to determine whether you are a good candidate. She will examine the patient’s facial structure to determine the right filler placement and review their medical history to make sure they do not have a history of allergic reactions to any of the Radiesse ingredients.
A small amount of bruising is normal with any facial filler injection. The risk of bruising can be decreased by avoiding blood-thinning medications for up to two weeks before treatment. If you are prescribed a blood thinner by your general physician, whether over-the-counter aspirin or prescription medication such as Plavix or Coumadin, please do not stop taking them without first discussing it with the doctor who prescribed them.
A topical numbing cream is applied to the targeted treatment area. Once it has been allowed to sit for at least 30 minutes, your treatment begins. All fillers, including Radiesse®, must be injected under the skin. A fine needle or cannula will be used to add volume to specific areas where patients are experiencing volume loss. There is a mild amount of discomfort associated with the procedure, but most of it is mitigated by the topical medication. In addition, Dr. Jennifer Janiga can add lidocaine to further decrease discomfort.
There is minimal downtime after Radiesse injections. Mild swelling and redness around the injection sites may last up to two to three days, while bruising may last from three to 10 days. Mild discomfort in the treated area may persist for one to two days, though it can be relieved with over-the-counter pain relievers.
If desired, applying a cool compress to swollen areas may reduce swelling and physical discomfort. Avoid rubbing, picking, squeezing, or manipulating the skin or filler underneath. Also, try to avoid strenuous activities for at least 48 hours after your procedure.
Patients will see some immediate volume improvement after their injectable procedure, but collagen stimulation takes several weeks to fully develop results. The volume effect of Radiesse® lasts about 12 months, depending on the area it is placed, but the collagen it stimulates is yours and will naturally degrade like your body’s own collagen at 1-3% per year. Patients will see a more youthful appearance with restored volume and a smooth skin texture.
