Earlobe repair, sometimes called lobuloplasty or torn earlobe repair, is a minor cosmetic surgery that fixes split, stretched, or torn earlobes, as well as drooping earlobes. Over time, heavy earrings can gradually stretch earlobe piercings or elongate a piercing hole, while gauges intentionally widen the earlobe to accommodate larger jewelry; both can leave a visible gap or thinned tissue even after the jewelry is removed. Earlobes can also tear from sudden trauma, whether from an earring snagging on clothing, being pulled by a child, or an accident. Because the earlobe is made up mostly of skin and soft tissue rather than cartilage, it’s relatively straightforward to reshape, which is part of why earlobe repair surgery tends to be quicker and less involved than many other facial procedures.
Patients seek earlobe repair for a variety of reasons, including a torn or split earlobe from an injury or a torn earlobe caused by a stretched piercing, dangling earrings, or heavy hoops over time, a stretched or elongated piercing hole from years of wearing heavy jewelry, closing gauged earlobes to return the earlobe to its natural shape, and correcting multiple piercings that were placed too close together or too near the bottom of the lobe; larger gauge repairs can require more complex reconstruction techniques. Beyond the physical repair, many patients find that damaged or stretched earlobes affect their confidence, limit the earrings they feel comfortable wearing, or make them avoid certain hairstyles that reveal their ears. Restoring a natural-looking earlobe can address both the physical and the emotional side of that concern, and the best repair plan depends on the extent of tissue damage and the patient’s cosmetic goals.
Before your earlobe repair, you’ll meet with Dr. Janiga for a consultation and physical examination of your earlobe, or both earlobes if you’re having them treated together. Dr. Janiga will discuss your goals, review your health history, and ask about any current medications, supplements, or use of nicotine or tobacco products, since these can affect healing. He’ll also examine the condition of the affected tissue, the size of the hole or tear, and the health of the surrounding skin to determine whether a simple closure or a more involved tissue rotation is the right approach for your anatomy. You’ll be asked to avoid wearing jewelry in the affected ear before your procedure, and you may be asked to temporarily pause certain medications or stop tobacco use in the weeks surrounding surgery.
Earlobe repair is typically a small procedure and an in office surgical procedure commonly performed for torn or stretched lobes under local anesthesia in our Reno office. Dr. Janiga will clean the treatment area and inject a small amount of local anesthetic into the earlobe; as with many cosmetic procedures, you’ll feel a brief pinch, but the area will be numb for the remainder of the procedure. He’ll then make a small incision, and a thin layer of healed skin may be removed from the tear or stretched hole so skin heals by bringing fresh tissue edges together properly; minor splits are often treated with straight-line closure, while longer tears may require advanced techniques such as Zz– plasty for improved scar placement and natural looking results. If both ears need repair, they can typically be treated in the same visit. The procedure usually takes less than an hour, and most patients are able to drive themselves home the same day, with the repaired tissue carefully sutured to restore the natural contour of the lobe as part of a procedure performed in office.

Most patients have an easy recovery and return to work or normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. It’s common to have some numbness as the anesthetic wears off, along with mild bruising, swelling, or tenderness that are most noticeable during the first week. Dr. Janiga will provide specific aftercare instructions, which generally include keeping the incision clean with mild soap and water, applying an antibiotic ointment as directed, sleeping with your head elevated for the first few nights, and following any activity restrictions during early healing to protect the incision when getting dressed or brushing your hair. You will be required to avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks. You’ll also be asked to avoid smoking, alcohol, and certain blood-thinning medications or supplements while your earlobe heals, and to keep the area dry and out of pools or hot tubs until it’s fully healed. Sutures are typically removed, or dissolve on their own, within one to two weeks, with any needed suture removal often scheduled at a follow-up visit in about a week. Minor issues such as infection, slight asymmetry, or a scar can occur, though scarring usually fades over time.
Earlobe repair is considered a low-risk procedure, though as with any surgery, some patients may experience minor bruising, temporary numbness, sensitivity, or a small, fine scar during the healing process. Full healing can take several weeks, but complete tissue healing may take several months, and results become more apparent as any residual swelling resolves. Some patients are also more prone to prominent scarring or keloid formation. If you’re interested in re-piercing your ear afterward, most patients can do so, though it’s generally recommended to wait three to six months after surgery before they wear earrings again in a new piercing, and any new piercing should be placed at least 3mm from the scar. Re-piercing too early risks tearing the repair or stressing the repaired tissue before complete healing. For initial re-piercing, lightweight studs and other lightweight earrings are best, while heavy jewelry should be avoided early on. Dr. Janiga will let you know a timeline specific to your healing.
Even a “minor” procedure like earlobe repair benefits from the hands of an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon, particularly for earlobes with more significant tearing, stretching, or scar tissue that require careful tissue rotation to look natural. Dr. Timothy Janiga is a board-certified plastic surgeon with over two decades of experience, and his meticulous, detail-oriented approach applies as much to smaller facial procedures like earlobe repair as it does to more extensive facial surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and the American Institute of Plastic Surgeons, and he has been repeatedly recognized among the “10 Best Plastic Surgeons in Nevada” and honored with multiple “Top Doctor in Nevada” awards. That level of fellowship trained expertise is especially valuable when technique choice affects scar quality and contour.
JanigaMDs is also the only practice in Northern Nevada offering the combined expertise of a board-certified plastic surgeon and a board-certified dermatologist under one roof, allowing for comprehensive care and follow-up support throughout your healing process. Patients consistently note the practice’s attentive, detail-focused approach, even for smaller procedures like earlobe repair. Because these are usually cosmetic procedures, insurance rarely covers them, though some trauma-related repairs may be covered, and earlobe repair costs vary.
If a torn, stretched, or gauged earlobe has been holding you back from wearing the earrings you love, Dr. Janiga can help with repair ranging from torn earlobe correction to gauged earlobe reconstruction, including cases with excess skin or when little tissue remains; flap-based repairs may be used for large holes or significant distortion, while volume-loss concerns may also be addressed with dermal fillers or fat grafting. For mild thinning or support concerns, earlobe rejuvenation can also involve injectable fillers or earring support instead of repair alone.
