Intense-pulsed light (IPL) is a photorejuvenation treatment to help reduce the appearance of many skin issues, including rosacea, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, large pores, freckles, age spots, spider veins, stretch marks, fine lines, broken capillaries, blood vessels, and more. Concentrated pulses of light energy target pigmentation or blood vessels. The light pulses are converted into heat, which destroys the targeted excess pigmentation or blood cellsand stimulates collagen, restoring smoother skin and a clearer complexion.
The IPL Photofacial can be performed on the entire face or on larger areas of the body, compared to IPL spot treatments that target small areas. A Photofacial can also stimulate collagen production to address mild skin laxity and restore youthful skin, providing significant skin rejuvenation to help you look and feel your absolute best!
At JanigaMDs, we have three options to choose from to perform your photofacial. All are great devices on their own, and the best one based on your skin type, desired results, and skin color will be used to tailor your treatment specifically to you and your needs.
Lumecca intense-pulsed light technology uses powerful, filtered, broad-spectrum light energy that specifically targets pigment irregularities and vascular concerns in the skin. The technology also incorporates a cooling sapphire tip to enhance patient comfort during treatment and support consistent outcomes. Lumecca is capable of addressing sun damage, age spots, freckles, rosacea redness, superficial veins, and uneven skin tone with precision, revealing a clearer, more even, and brighter complexion.
Similar to Lumecca, the Max G IPL device is designed to improve the appearance of skin texture, pigmentation issues, and vascular conditions through its non-invasive photofacial therapy. What makes this device unique is its Dynamic Spectrum Shifting, which uses dual wavelength bands to more effectively target larger broken blood vessels and facial veins compared to traditional IPL therapy.
The newest IPL at JanigaMDs, M22 Stellar technology, is the most versatile device for treating the most sun-damaged and complicated patients. It has filters specific for treating blood vessels and sun spots in Skin Types 1-4, as well as more generalized treatments for those patients who have less sun damage and are looking for a more overall improvement. Dr. Janiga and her associates may sometimes start with one of the IPLs, like the M22, for your first few treatments and then change to one of the others once you have some improvements, or we may continue with this IPL for all of your treatments, depending on how you are doing with the therapy.
Healthy individuals who are looking to improve the look of their aging or sun-damaged skin without undergoing a more aggressive laser or procedure and who are tired of living with skin blemishes and irregularities can often benefit from this treatment option. The best way to determine if this treatment is right for you is through a consultation with Dr. Jennifer Janiga or her associates.
During the procedure, you will wear eye protection, and an IPL device will be applied to the treatment areas of the body, emitting a light that heats sun spots, blood vessels, and collagen. The heat encourages the production of more collagen to smooth lines, wrinkles, and acne scars. The laser light is also absorbed by capillaries and brown spots, damaging and eliminating them from the skin for a smoother, more even complexion. The treatment process is described as feeling like a rubber band being snapped against the skin with little discomfort for most patients.c
Following your photofacial, there is little to no downtime needed. Patients may experience mild swelling and mild discomfort, similar to having a mild sunburn around their face, which will subside within 24 hours. Patients should avoid excess sun exposure immediately after treatment, since this could irritate the skin or cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
The number of treatment sessions may vary depending on your individual aesthetic goals. Most patients will undergo 2-4 treatments spaced four weeks apart to give themselves a boost and then 1-2 treatments a year after that, depending on their level of sun exposure in the past and future. Patients will see noticeable improvements with each session, with improvements in overall skin tone and texture. Your designated physician will determine what timeframe works best for your needs.
