Winter Skincare Tips

When the seasons’ change, so does our skin. In colder climates, the winter weather can wreak havoc on our skin. This can be a difficult time, as your skin becomes dry, cracked, and rough. Dermatologists such as Dr. Jennifer Janiga want patients to understand how to take care of their skin during the colder months of the year. Here are a few tips to help your skin stay healthy this winter.

Stay Hydrated

The skin is the body’s largest organ. To keep it healthy and functioning correctly, it needs to be hydrated. There are a few things that can be done to keep your skin hydrated. Make sure to drink an extra glass or two of water as cold weather dries out the skin much faster. Also, to prevent dryness, buy a humidifier. They range in size from large ones for whole rooms or small ones that you can put on your desk at work or on your bedside table. Another good way to make sure your skin has enough moisture is to use a topical moisturizer, such as Cetaphil or CeraVe cream, a couple of times a day.

Use SPF

Many people relate summer with sunscreen, but really the sunscreen should be used year-round. Yes, even in winter months in climates where there is not a lot of sunshine, the harmful rays can still penetrate your skin. Dr. Janiga can recommend a sunscreen that will benefit your skin. Check out the list of skincare products here.

Change Up Your Skincare Routine

The way you take care of your skin in the summer and winter should vary slightly. During the winter try a gentle cleaner like EltaMD or Cetaphil cleanser. Switch to thicker creams instead of lotions and apply more often.

Exfoliate Less

Exfoliating is good for your skin. It helps to shed dead skin cells, remove impurities, and clean out pores. If you have dry skin, overexfoliating can damage it even more. Think about switching to exfoliating only once a week or stopping it altogether during winter, depending on your skin type. By speaking with Dr. Janiga or her associates, they can help you to care for your skin throughout the year with skincare tips, so it looks healthy and vibrant.

Book a Skin Treatment

Getting a professional skin treatment is a great way to take care of your skin. Professional skin treatments can remove dead skin cells, impurities, and clear pores, all in one treatment session. With the bonus of adding in professional products that will keep the skin healthy. Janiga MDs offers chemical peels, microneedling, and more to patients in the Reno area.
