Now everyone is happy at Janiga MDs! Janiga MDs is proud to introduce laughing gas or nitric oxide for in-office procedures. For years we’ve had patients ask us “why can’t I have nitrous at the doctor’s office like I do at the dentist?” Now you can!
What is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a colorless gas with a pleasant taste and odor. It has a long history of safety dating back to its first use for dental procedures in 1844. Nitrous will give you a relaxed or silly feeling but will not put you to sleep. You will be aware and able to respond to commands and hold a conversation. It wears off a few minutes after use and you are able to drive home afterward.
How Nitrous is Used During a Procedure
Nitrous oxide can be administered with a mouthpiece for almost any in-office procedure. When you come in, a short medical history will be performed to make sure nitrous oxide is safe for you. You will receive a handheld mouthpiece to breathe the nitrous oxide for a few minutes prior to the start of your procedure. Then, during your procedure, you can take additional doses as needed for comfort.
Recovery & Downtime with Nitrous
After your procedure is finished, we will discontinue the administration of the nitrous oxide and have you stay in the office for 5 to 10 minutes for the nitrous to dissipate out of your system. Once this has been completed, you’ll be free to drive home on your own accord.
