Laser resurfacing is the gold standard for resurfacing and delivers CO2 or erbium laser energy to the superficial and deep layers of the skin to stimulate changes, while radiofrequency resurfacing uses radiofrequency energy to achieve the desired result. At JanigaMDs, we offer all three types of resurfacing, and these technologies can be tailored and combined to suit your skin type, desired recovery time, and optimal outcomes. JanigaMDs is also excited to offer ThreeForMe™, which targets three different skin problems with one treatment using a combination of intense-pulsed light and resurfacing laser energy.
The eCO2 3D is a next-generation fractional CO₂ laser system from Cynosure, designed to redefine skin resurfacing by combining power, flexibility, and precision. While CO₂ lasers have long been the gold standard in skin resurfacing, many traditional systems trade off between downtime, safety, and treatment flexibility. The new eCO2 3D addresses these limitations by offering a wide therapeutic range. From gentler “Precision Peel” sessions with 2-3 days of recovery, to deeper, more transformative resurfacing, all in one platform.
The CO2 laser is a fractional laser resurfacing technology that creates microscopic wounds in the skin to deliver concentrated pulsating beams of laser energy into the deep skin layers, stimulating collagen production and resurfacing the underlying skin. By targeting specific types of cells in the skin, resurfacing can significantly repair aged or sun-damaged skin, revealing smoother, brighter skin with a more youthful appearance.
Clinically, the eCO2 3D is cleared for a broad spectrum of skin conditions, including skin laxity (loose or mildly sagging skin), fine lines and wrinkles, surgical and acne scars, dyschromia (uneven pigmentation), sun damage, and textural irregularities.
This advanced laser platform is designed to deliver faster, more effective treatments while allowing for deeper ablation when needed. With three interchangeable handpieces, Dr. Janiga can precisely control laser penetration based on different skin types that may need more or less intensity. This allows treatment customization between different patients, but also in different areas of the face and neck on the same patient. Dual treatment modes further enhance flexibility by offering multiple levels of resurfacing, allowing smoother blending between treated areas for more natural, consistent results. Controlled scanning technology adds another layer of safety and precision by randomizing beam delivery to evenly distribute energy across the skin. This approach reduces hotspots, improves overall treatment safety, and supports more efficient, optimized healing.
Before receiving laser skin resurfacing, patients will schedule a consultation with Dr. Jennifer Janiga or her associates, where they will examine their medical history and discuss the laser procedure in more detail to determine whether they are a good candidate. Laser skin resurfacing works for most skin tones and skin types, but may not be a good option for those with darker skin, since there is an increased risk of pigmentation post-treatment. Patients with a history of melasma, keloid scarring, or an active skin infection may not be good candidates for this laser.
During your consultation, Dr. Janiga or one of her associates will assess your skin, concerns, desired recovery time, and goals. Based on that evaluation, the appropriate spot sizes, depth, and mode will be selected to deliver an optimal treatment plan. The treatment area is cleansed and numbed using a topical anesthetic to maximize patient comfort. For those who have a low tolerance to pain or would prefer the most comfortable procedure possible, we offer nerve blocks for the full face and neck for those patients, as well as the option for nitrous if desired.
The fractional CO₂ beam is delivered via microbeams in a pattern that leaves the outer layer of skin intact. There are two different modes: static and dynamic. Static is commonly used for deeper resurfacing to tighten skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, whereas dynamic delivers gentler, faster pulses for more superficial rejuvenation to even tone and smooth texture. Treatment can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the number of areas treated, the size of the areas, and the intensity.
After treatment, a soothing ointment will be applied, and we will provide detailed instructions for aftercare, including sun protection and gentle skin management during recovery. You will receive a complimentary post-care package of sunscreen, gentle cleanser, and healing ointments with day-to-day instructions on how to take care of your skin afterward as part of your laser package.
Recovery depends on how aggressive your treatment is and somewhat on your personal ability to heal. For lighter peel treatments, you can expect mild redness for up to 2-3 days and very minimal social downtime. For moderate to deep resurfacing, the healing process can last for up to a week or more, with mild discomfort and swelling. These deeper resurfacing sessions are reserved for those with more severe sun damage and deeper wrinkling. Your provider will walk you through expected downtime, recovery care, and guidelines for sun exposure and skin maintenance based on your specific treatment and skin type.
Deeper treatments will see transformative changes in just a single session, though lighter treatments will see results over time and may require repeated treatments to achieve desired results. Patients may see continuing improvement for up to a year. As the treated skin heals, new skin is revealed, new collagen fibers develop, and patients will see a significant improvement in the texture, tone, and firmness of their skin.
