What is a TCA Peel?
A TCA peel uses a chemical solution called trichloroacetic acid to target the outer layers of the skin, inducing peeling, tightening, and collagen stimulation. With the outer damaged skin cells removed, patients can enjoy new, brighter skin underneath. There are several different types of peels, each with a different active chemical, depending on the patient’s concerns. Chemical peels are used for various skin concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and acne scars. TCA peels can range from light to medium depending on the concentration used, help correct mild to moderate skin concerns.
Who is a Candidate?
Candidates for the TCA chemical peel are those who want to improve the appearance of fine lines, mild acne, acne scars, sun damage, dull skin, or uneven pigmentation. It is important for individuals with a naturally darker skin tone to undergo a special pre-treatment consultation to avoid unintended color changes in the skin. The peel can also be used for overall rejuvenation, revealing fresh, smooth skin and improving uneven skin texture. The TCA peel is appropriate for many skin types, however, it is not right for everyone. Dr. Jennifer Janiga and her associates can examine your skin and discuss your concerns to ensure that the TCA peel is right for you.
The Procedure
The TCA peel treatment is performed in Dr. Jennifer Janiga’s office in Reno. The skin will first be cleansed and prepped to ensure the TCA peel formula effectively penetrates the skin. The TCA solution will then be applied to the skin. Compared to other chemical peels with glycolic acid, lactic acid, or salicylic acid, TCA peels penetrate deeper and have a longer recovery period. Most patients report a stinging sensation that lasts a few minutes. The entire process typically takes no longer than 30 minutes to complete.
Results & Recovery
After treatment with the TCA chemical peel, patients can expect some redness, swelling, and temporary skin darkening, but should experience minimal discomfort during the healing process. Within a week of treatment, the outer layers of skin will begin to peel to show new, improved skin underneath. The TCA peel can improve rough skin, reduce skin discoloration and improve overall skin tone. The fresh new skin will be sensitive to the sun, especially if you had a medium peel. For about six weeks after treatment with the medium peel, patients should avoid prolonged sun exposure and continue to apply daily sunscreen. TCA peels are usually done in the winter months. The results of the TCA chemical peel are long-lasting and treatments can be repeated in the future for maintenance.
