What is Dysport®?
Dysport is a botulinum toxin A that competes with other brand names like Botox and Xeomin. Although nothing can completely stop the process of aging, injectables called neuromodulators have been created to treat lines and wrinkles on the face. Dysport® injections may vary slightly in dosage, time of onset, and length of results compared to other products, sometimes lasting longer or kicking in faster that other products. Each patient is different and may prefer one botulinum toxin product over the other.
For cosmetic purposes, Dysport® is FDA-approved to treat glabellar lines (frown lines) for three to four months. The wrinkle treatment temporarily inhibits muscle contractions in and around the injection site.
Dysport® injections are usually used to treat men and women in their 30s – 70s to prevent wrinkles on the face. If patients receive their initial treatment with Dysport® before wrinkles show up, it may be able to prevent lines from forming in the first place.
When used correctly, Dysport® will result in a very natural look, temporarily blocking nerve signals to diminish wrinkles and relax facial muscle contractions that cause lines.
Reasons For Dysport Treatment
Many patients choose Dysport® because it provides natural-looking results that combat facial wrinkles and lines, including glabellar frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet while maintaining normal facial expressions. For aesthetic purposes, it is most commonly used to help reduce wrinkles and improve overall appearance without surgery.
If you’re considering Dysport®, our board-certified dermatologists and specialists will carefully review your medical history to ensure treatment is safe for you.
Before Your Dysport Procedure
Prior to your Dysport treatment, you’ll meet with one of our experienced providers to discuss your goals and review your medical history, including any new medicines, you may be taking. It’s important to tell your doctor about any past allergic reactions, history of trouble breathing, sore throat, muscle weakness, eyelid drooping, blurred vision, or other possible side effects from previous botulinum toxin treatments like BOTOX®. This helps us ensure your safety and minimize risks.
Your provider will also go over important aftercare instructions, such as avoiding strenuous exercise and other activities for several hours post-treatment to ensure proper absorption. By following your provider’s guidance, you can look forward to a smooth treatment experience, a short recovery time, and refreshed, natural looking results.
Comparing Injectables
There are four main types of neuromodulators: Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Xeomin®.
At Janiga MDs, Dr. Timothy Janiga specializes in plastic surgery and Dr. Jennifer Janiga specializes in dermatology, giving their practice a unique, comprehensive perspective on their patients’ cosmetic needs in the Reno, Nevada area.
Your Dysport Procedure
Anesthesia is not required with Dysport®. Instead, the area will be cleaned and prepared for the cosmetic injections, and depending on your desired results, multiple injections may be required. Dysport® treatments are performed in the JanigaMDs Reno, NV office, and the procedure generally takes about 10 to 15 minutes, full results are between three and ten days, depending on how your body reacts to Dysport. There may be some injection site tenderness for a few hours, but as the botulinum toxin settles, these effects will fade.
After Your Dysport Procedure
Patients may experience a small pinpoint bruise at the site of the intramuscular injection. This is not common, but it can happen. When injected, Dysport® takes about 20 minutes to be absorbed, so you will see small areas of injection site swelling where the injections were placed. It will fade relatively quickly.
What to Expect After Dysport Injections
Dysport® generally lasts for approximately three to four months, but before treating patients with Dysport® injections, our providers will gather their medical history to ensure there is no increased risk for negative side effects.
