Why do wrinkles form?

There are many reasons for the formation of wrinkles on the face including genetic susceptibility, weight loss, gravity, repetitive muscle movement, and loss of bone and fat. Any or all of these can be contributing to the signs of aging on the face.

What are the options to treat wrinkles?

There are many different options for the treatment of wrinkles on the face including topicals, botox, fillers, lasers, and surgical procedures. Depending on the area of the face and type of wrinkles you have, one or a combination of these options would be the correct option for your skin.

What topical treatments are there for wrinkles?

Before discussing the treatments for wrinkles the most important thing to start with is a great moisturizer for the evening and a moisturizing sunscreen for the morning. Once you have chosen these two with your dermatologist you would add the three scientifically proven topical treatments for wrinkles.. These include antioxidants, retinoids, and growth factors. Each of these topical products are scientifically proven to improve the different signs of aging on the skin. Retinoids and Growth Factors are known to increase collagen formation and are the mainstay of topical treatment for wrinkles.

What other treatments are available to treat wrinkles?

Resurfacing lasers are another common way to treat wrinkles on the face, chest and neck. The resurfacing lasers can be set to be more aggressive for more resurfacing or less aggressive for less resurfacing and less down time depending on your profession and need for personal discretion. The ICON laser is this type of resurfacing laser and is known to build collagen and make a significant improvement in wrinkles on the skin of the face, neck and chest.

What about Botox and fillers for my wrinkles?

Botox and Dysport are used alone or in combination with the above treatments for wrinkles caused by muscle movement. The wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes are the usual areas treated with Botox or Dysport, but other areas around the mouth and chin are also targeted depending on your situation. Hyaluronic dermal fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane, Radiesse) are used to target specific areas of fat or bone loss as well as to “fill in” fine wrinkles.
