Botox vs. Daxxify: What to Know

Botox vs. Daxxify: What to Know

Janiga MDs welcomes the newest Botox competitor, Daxxify, to its practice. If you’ve heard of Daxxify, you may be confused about what makes it special versus its biggest competitor, Botox. There are actually some key differences with this exciting new injectable that can make it a treatment of choice for many patients. Botox and Daxxify share a great safety profile and great results with limited side effects, but there are some differences to know. Here’s a quick guide to this new treatment and how it can help you feel like your most confident self.

What is Daxxify?

Daxxify was approved by the FDA in September 2022. It’s an injectable similar to Botox, Xeomin, Jeuveau, and Dysport in that it’s a botulinumtoxin A neuromodulator that inhibits muscle contraction. In short, it uses a specialized form of bacteria to block movement signals in the facial muscles, creating a reduction in wrinkles when making certain expressions. Although Botox has been achieving great results for decades, Daxxify is an exciting new alternative that can do many of the same things but better.

What’s the Difference Between Botox and Daxxify?

Botox and Daxxify each offer unique benefits, and it’s best to consult your board-certified dermatologist about your best options. Here are some of the main differences between these two options.

Long-Lasting Results

The most important difference between Botox and Daxxify is that 60% of patients treated with Daxxify will have results that last five months or longer, while most patients that receive Botox will have results that last closer to 3-4 months. You may think that this gives Daxxify an edge over Botox, but Daxxify is more expensive – so if you’re not one of the 60% for whom it lasts longer, it may not be the right choice for you.

Additives

Another difference includes the ways that the botulinumtoxin A is stabilized in each option. Botox uses albumin as a stabilizer while Daxxify uses peptides. It’s these peptides that are hypothesized to allow Daxxify to last longer. Daxxify is the first injectable of its kind to use this ingredient, and it shows great promise for patients who want to try a new approach to anti-aging – or who may not be good candidates for Botox because of its ingredients.

Cost and Units

The number of units used during treatment is different between the two – meaning if you’ve had Botox in the past, Daxxify is not necessarily a direct transition. For example, in a given area, Botox uses about 20 units while Daxxify would use 40. This means the cost is also different, with Daxxify costing about 25-30% more to treat the same area. However, for longer-lasting results, many patients find this to be a great compromise.
