What is Liposuction?
Liposuction removes fatty deposits that do not disappear despite exercise and dietary efforts. Patients who have discrete areas of fatty deposits make the best candidates for liposuction. This targeted fat-removing procedure can help shape areas of your body for slimming and toning effect, which makes that skin tight swim suit look amazing!
How does Liposuction work?
There are many different ways to perform this procedure including use of lasers, ultrasound, and radiofrequency. Despite the many different ways, suction-assisted liposuction or SAL, is still considered the gold-standard. SAL removes fatty deposits from beneath the skin by using a hollow stainless steel tube or cannula. The cannula is passed through a small poke hole in the skin and then is passed underneath the skin into the fatty deposits which are then suctioned out with the assistance of a vacuum.
Does Liposuction hurt?
This procedure can be performed under general anesthesia, IV sedation or by local anesthesia only. Numbing medication called tumescent solution is placed beneath the skin to provide anesthesia and to help prevent blood loss. Most plastic surgeons will use tumescent solution when performing an SAL.
How long does the process take?
It generally takes between one and two hours with approximately one hour of recovery time. The procedure can be performed in the office for small areas or in our surgery center for large areas under a general anesthetic.
Am I a good candidate?
If you have stubborn areas where fat exists despite your best effort with diet and exercise, you may be a good candidate for liposuction. Contact Dr. Timothy Janiga today and schedule a consultation.
